"Walking Girl Tryptich" /  by Philip Tarlow

12:06 PM: i just hung these 3 paintings on my East studio wall. when made the first one; the larger painting in the middle, i had no conscious intention of making 2 more portraying the same woman viewed from above.

this morning i got that they constitute a tryptich, and hung them side by side, which is how i envision them at my next exhibition, and how i’m hoping they’ll be purchased.

after hanging walking girl tryptich, i i proceeded to start work on a new on, painted on awhited over canvas. i had left one little area without whiting over it, which was a bowl of cut up watermelon. thne i proceeded to make a series of colored dots using the tip of a slender brush, not knowing in that moment why i was making them.

"walking girl" and “Walking girl II” /  by Philip Tarlow

11:27 AM: i’m in my studio and the wind is blowing hard. just finished a conversation with my grand daughter which was wonderful. she just started school at the university in salonica. we had a great exchange and i suggested we talk regularly. she liked the idea, so we’ll connect again in a week or two.

i painted over….again, a 25x25” painting i’ve been working on. when i white over an existing painting, i love leaving areas semi transparent and painting into them. in this case, it’s a walking female figure seen from above. i’m going to leave it like this for a day or two and see how i feel abot it. right now, i love it!

i can envision an entire exhibition with paintings that have been whited over and then painted into, like this one. stay tuned.

1:30 PM: i painted over one more 25x25” recent work i was so-so about and made walking girl II”

10:30 AM: this morning we were up at 5 & got to the studio at 6. i has started work on a, 18x20 canvas yesterday, which i continued working on and may have completed this morning.

11:03 AM: i started working on this one yesterday. when i gazed at it this morning, upon entering my studio, the black & white checkerboard patterning on the upper right was dominating the composition, si i toned it down. what i had done was still wet, so it was easy to rub it out, revealing the same patterning underneath, but without the black.. here’s the before & after. see what i mean about the b&w checkerboard patterning dominating the composition? and in person, it’s SO much better!

9:29 AM:

i got an early start today. i whited over my latest version of girl with a suitcase and began work on figures in a doorway III, a variation of the previous two paintings with this theme and title.

on the left: 9/19/26 figures in doorway III ond on the right: figures in doorway I, 8/17/26 38x36”

9/19/26 figures in doorway III, 25x25” oil on linen

and this is a 38x36” version i made on 8/26/26, which led to the current version.

9/14/26 DOoRPLAY /  by Philip Tarlow

2:52 PM: i spent a good part of the day working on the 10 1/2 x 16 1/2” doorplay. i think it’s vastly improved, having found it’s voice. if you look back at my work over the past 3-4 months, you will find consistant marks and imagry; just as, when we go out on our morning trail walks, there are consistant marks on the beautiful crestone rocks. nonetheless, each has it’s own signature.

9/14/26 doorplay takes these elements to a new dimension. the checkerboard b&w patterning on the upper and lower right, has appeared in one way or another in my recent work. here, however, i feel that it engages the entire composition, creating a kind of “classical” feeling. everything in this composition is exactly where it needs to be. gazing at it, as i am at the moment, from a distace of about 20 feet, as one might in a gallery or museum, it engages you fully. ican’t wait to see this one well framed.

2:18 PM: i did more work on yesterdays painting/collage. at one point i wanted to make some marks with one of my fountain pens, so i brought a bottle of black ink over to my work table, opened it and dipped my pen. the pen’s reservoir was dry, which is why i had to dip the nib into the bottle of black ink. in the process, i hit it with my hand and the bottle fell over, spilling black ink everywhere, including both my legs and my toenails and sandals. a real MESS!

it took me over an hour to do the initial cleanup, but there’s a lot more to do. believe it or not, once i did the initial cleanup, i continued work on the piece, including a portion of a quote by matisse. so here it is in it’s current state.
