“IN MOTION II” / "Moonlight," day one / by Philip Tarlow

3:01 PM: after working this morning on the new painting, moonlight, i found a 18x13” canvas which i had started working on months ago and abandoned. so i painted over what was already there and started a smaller version of in motion, titled in motion II. so tomorrow i’ll work on both, going back and forth, which keeps me from getting stuck on one or the other.

in motion II, 18x13” , oil on portrait linen. this day one of a smaller version of in motion

MOONLIGHT, 32x36”, oil on portrait linen, on day 1

1:17 PM: i took some photos last time we went to moonlight pizza in salida, which has a very colorful interior. this morning i cut 2 more 32x36” pieces of portrait linen and on one i started this new painting, titled, oddly enough, moonlight.

this just begun painting reflects a new phase in my work. i’m excited by bright, primary colors boldly brushed on. as i’ve said repeatedly, this extra fine portrait linen plays a major role. the way the oil paint, brushed on with a gel medium, greets the primed linen surface is sheer magic. this immediacy inspires me to use colors i may not have thought to use prevously, and to apply them differently. i feel kind of like a child being given colors and making marks for the first time.

to be continued tomorrow.
