the painting no longer bears a resemblance to the velasquez original, other than a few ghost images. the title has changed to empty. i'll know in the morning whether i want to take it further.

back in the studio after 5 weeks of travel in texas & nyc. more to come about what we saw. for now, here's what i'm working on today. i'm using acryllic to see if i can work with it, so that, if i decide to use paper collaged over painting as i've been doing, the water based glue will adhere better to the surface.
below that is the 4th panel of a 4 panel commission for a client who will house her extensive collection of pins from the '08 athens olympic games in a custom built cabinet with 4 panels, which when opened will reveal the entire collection. more images once the commission is complete and the cabinet assembled. this painting was completed yesterday and shipped to houston, where it will be mounted on the wooden panel and join the other 3 for final assembly.

on nov. 8th i ventured out to n. crestone trail, knowing because of the weather forecast that this would be my last pleine air painting of 2012. I went to a site dominated by a sheer cliff sometimes used by climbers to practice. there was a distinct chill in the air and it was overcast.
the resulting painting, an oil on portrait linen 14x14" is one of the best of the 20 or so pleine air paintings i did this fall.

of interest: the deep red mark in the upper left quadrant of the painting (click on the final painting to enlarge) is a cutout from a reproduction of a 1963 tony berlant painting, sue, which I found in an old la louver catalogue.
this morning, i began reworking a painting now titled tensile beam, 78x25" collaged paper & canvas, oil & oil pastel on linen. this painting is loosely based on the collage on the right, created in august, 2012 in houston, tx.
