un-magique, 25x25” oil & oil pastels on portrait linen
10:05 AM: this morning i got bored with magique. so i dived in with my brushes, oil pastels and scrapers and the result is refreshing. for me at least. mikela was looking at the paintings we have hanging in the house, and commented on my unique mark making, which only i could have done. well, here i take it one step further; non-realist mark making. i’m finding it refreshing. not to make realist or abstracted realist painting wrong…i’m just in a space where my eye doesn’t want or need recognizable forms to be moved by a painting. even going back to prehistoric cave art, it’s always the marks. they are always personal signatures, which can only be made by that individual, and can elicit emotions as strong as any realist painting.
