nothing..... / by Philip Tarlow

4:02 pm: on the way to the studio......this morning on the way to my studio i wore my new keen hiking boots. they were on sale at REI, so we each ordered a pair. no other boots fit my feet as well as keens. every morning i walk past this beautiful fallen tree branch. it gets better every year. and i spied a cactus that seemed to be blooming, in spite of the fact that these cacti bloom every june, and the blossoms last only a few weeks. so it's a mystery why just this one plant had that vibrant pink color. ya think it was for me? the path you see leading to my studio has been created by my morning "commute." this land is so fragile that, if i were to stop using this short cut to my studio completely, it would take many years for the spare desert plants to regenerate.

2:21 pm: it was tricky, but i think i've settled on an image for the sister painting to parade 24,one of the two 48x48" parade paintings. it's drawn form the same image i used for parade 48, on the right. the reason for this is that while i'm waiting for new stretcher bars tp arrive from blick, i'm going to unstretch the 48x48" painting i re-worked a few days ago, parade 37, which, as i said in my post a few days ago, will not be a candidate for my nov. 5th houston show since it's gone in a different direction than the rest of the series. once i cut the canvas and make the drawing, you'll understand a lot better what i'm talking about.

BELOW: a pic of me, shot 3/2/15 working on parade 24 on the left, and the painting itself on the right. the image i've chosen, while not a direct match for parade 24, will have a similar spirit and tone.

12:14 pm: nothing. it's something when you think about it. if nothing is something, who are you?

John Cage's most famous musical composition is called 4'33". It consists of the pianist going to the piano, and not hitting any keys for four minutes and thirty-three seconds (he uses a stopwatch to time this). In other words, the entire piece consists of silences -- silences of different lengths, they say...
