parade 20: stages 1 & 2 / by Philip Tarlow

6:33 PM update: right now it's looking like this painting may be resolved. looking at it in relation t the others, it seems pretty strong. i feel that i've learned a lot from the previous 19 parade paintings. what works best, at least on this 16x16" scale, are larger figures that play a more dominant role in the composition. the patterning of the carpet and the shadows on the center top portion create a richness that enlivens the space, and the orange half disk on the left adds an essential accent of color. finally, the laptop image of the pooch on the lower left contributes a note of humorous intimacy.

as the time nears for the larger parade canvases, i'm wondering if i can maintain this level of brush work and tight compositional balance with no "filler."  can he do it? will he pull it off?

i have just enough artfix L84U portrait linen left for one more 16x16." i have one roll of the heavier weight L64U (also a portrait linen) ready to use for the larger works, with a second roll about to be ordered. there are just a few more materials i need to get started, so the first one should kick off  the week of feb. 2nd. perhaps earlier.

3:18 PM update:  so here's where the painting is at right now. i've had it for today, so i'll bring it back to the house, hang it near the rest of the series and evaluate. go to parade series under the drop down menu works to view it with the rest of the series and evaluate for yourself. hit comment, at the bottom of the page to let me know your opinion.

2:04PM update: below is stage 1 of parade 20. i got a late start; it was a bit difficult getting back into painting after my flu break, so i may not get as much done today as i had hoped.

had a fun, delicious & productive land trust meeting transitioning into dinner & stories & laughter with friends last night. Learned something about the new Photoshop CC and Lightroom from 2 friends who use them a lot. I'm currently on a one month test before diving in to the Adobe 10 bucks a month deal, where you get them both, continually updated.

i'm currently completing transfer of the drawing & almost ready to start painting.

12:53PM:  if you've never heard paul robeson sing, pull him up on youtube or pandora and listen, right now! i've loved him since i was a kid, but one of his songs just came up on my PandoraJam, and he never fails to move me deeply. what a voice! and what a story!
