today i started work on el bufón, after the velasquez painting el bufón llamado don juan de austria, which hangs in madrid, in the prado. stage 5, at the end of my painting day today, is on the upper left, followed on the right by stages 4, 3, 2 & 1 below.
the painting began, as can be seen in stage 1, as a drawing in graphite of rocks & water, based upon my plein air work. the jester's black hat, clearly visible in stages 3 & 4, is now at the bottom of the painting, upside down. the original velasquez painting is on the 3rd row, right.
