5/25/14 yesterday was a stormy day. we were fortunate to receive .67" of rain, edging us closer to normal levels for the year. while working on this new piece, it was so dark i had to use artificial lighting, which is rare.
THE PROCESS:
the piece began, (image on the left, below) as have many recently, with a riff on the calligraphy of my beloved 11th c. chinese master huang tingjian (below: 3rd row). next, studies in colored pencil and crayon, based upon my plein air paintings of north crestone creek, were made and cut into biomorphically shaped pieces. along with sections of maps and other scraps of paper, they were collaged over the calligraphy, allowing some of it to peek through.
