3/19/14 1 collage on paper, 1 on canvas / by Philip Tarlow

refer to yesterday's blog for insight into this move towards larger collages. suffice it to say, i totally knocked myself out today working on these two.

as i said in yesterday's blog, a language or alphabet is emerging, from years of drawing and painting the rocks, water and branches at nearby north crestone creek. the biomorphic shapes constitute a vocabulary of marks which, when juxtaposed and scrambled as happens in the collaging process, are evocative of a plethora of biological forms. the addition of various paper material i use: old maps; anime images; magazine articles on watches......creates further ambiguity and allow the eye to move over the surface and make "sense" of the space. i do this naturally, whether i'm looking at a non representational work or a vermeer.
