12/4/14 the drawing for parade 14 and musings on a self portrait & the nabis / by Philip Tarlow

3:10 update: a veritable treasure trove!! that's what i found as i was making the drawing for what was going to be b.l.u. 14. i had one of those feelings you get, and i went to my iMac and searched for more museum photos. although i had searched in vain before, LO! i discovered a folder i had forgotten (i've forgotten them all; there are just too many....i need an assistant!) filled with photos from above i had taken at MOMA during a nyc trip. they were SO cool i immediately cropped and printed one out, feverishly copied it and traced it onto the canvas and, despite the really crappy light (unusual for crestone) launched into it. here is stage one, where i'll probably stop because it's just getting too dark, although this is one i'd love to paint straight through in one shot.why do i love to paint? you're looking' at it.

today i'm working on the drawing for best left unsaid 14, as well as contemplating the nabis movement and a possible future self portrait. below left, a photo i shot a few minutes ago that may become the basis for a self portrait. on the right, a statement by jan verkade (1868-1946) summarizing the idealistic aims of the nabis in the early 1890's. the two main representatives of this movement were bonnard and vuillard, both of whom i have always loved. their work served as inspiration for the athens school movement of the 1960's and '70's, of which i was a part, and which will be the subject of the exhibition at the hellenic museum in melbourne, australia, which i am both co-curating and participating in. and on row 2, a dutch 17th c. painting i shot in the national gallery, washington, d.c.

more on the progress of b.l.u. 14 later today.
