11/23/14 the next parade painting and-then and now / by Philip Tarlow

the next in the parade series, #13, will be based on this photo, one of the shots i took during a 2008 trip to MOMA in NYC. if you look carefully, you'll see a slight blur to the figures; an indication that i moved the camera while shooting. this actually creates a more painterly feel to the photo, and i'm really curious to see how i deal with it once i start working, probably wednesday mid-day, after we return from our denver trip & i've had a chance to transfer the drawing to the canvas.

THEN & NOW:

my studio on the island of andros was in a large house directly on the sea in the plakoura neighborhood of the capitol town of chora. it then belonged to my ex-wife's grandmother mina, and now belongs to my son dimitri. in it, over the 15 years i lived in greece, i painted a series of andros landscapes and portraits of andriots. it was small in relation to my current spacious studio, which is 500 ft. from our house, in the foothills of the sangre de christo mountains. you can view some of the paintings i made during the greek period under the drop down menu: greece.

our denver trip got pushed up a day, so we're leaving this afternoon. we'll take the longer route, across the 160 and up the 25, to avoid possible road closures on the 285 due to high winds and blowing snow in fairplay, which is always dicey in winter. we have meetings related to our educational startup tomorrow, then dinner with good friends who have homes in denver & crestone, then drive home, after our traditional food shopping at whole foods & costco, tuesday afternoon.
