8/19-20 ying creek 96x18" STAGES 1 & 2 / by Philip Tarlow

8/19 the top panel needs work. can i maintain this level of simplicity and rework the upper panel? tomorrow.

8/20 worked on ying creek all day. i feel like i'm making progress in creating my vision of evocative abbreviation. the term was coined by maxwell k. hearn, author of how to read chinese paintings, who is something of a hero for me. he used it to introduce the work of xia gui (active 1195-1230) who "prepared the way for the calligraphic revolution of expressive brushwork in the ensuing yuan dynasty (1271-1368)."
