10/8 pleine air painting at n. crestone creek / by Philip Tarlow

10/10 How fortunate are we to live here? On Tuesday I went out and painted the one you see below. It was a perfect afternoon, and the energy of the creek allowed me, as it usually does, to leave my head and just PAINT. This one has a vaguely guston-esque feel. philip guston at his peak, before he started with the shoes and shoe laces stuff, was, i believe, one of the bright lights in the ab-ex movement of the '50's and '60's.

i continue to feel the effects of these bursts of pleine air activity here in my studio where, in the larger acrylic and collaged paper paintings, which you can see here: http://philiptarlow.com/large-format/  that creek energy is transmuted. i will only know what it is i've done over the past 6 months or so when a selection of the new work goes up on the walls of gremillion & co. fine art in houston on december 12th.
